World of Warcraft
Here's why World of Warcraft is still going strong 15 years after its initial release: a steady supply of material keeps the game new and active. Like the recent Shadowlands expansion, which transports players to the afterlife, provides four new zones, and requires them to choose a Covenant to which they pledge allegiance. In World of Warcraft, you can farm, play a Plants vs. Zombies-style mini-game, engage in pet battles, solve puzzles, complete quests, explore new areas, and much more.
The Witcher 3
Nothing compares to The Witcher 3, where you can help put a noonwraith's soul to rest one moment and then head to the Passiflora and engage in some heavy petting the next (that you paid for). The Witcher 3 will hook you faster than you can say "Wind's howling." It's a fantastic mix of tough (but fun) combat, brilliant writing, and truly difficult decisions. Geralt of Rivia is reviled as well as needed by the people of this mythical world, and the tension of being an outsider in an environment that is becoming more prejudiced by the minute is palpable.
But it's simple to keep yourself occupied: spend your time slaying monsters or searching for rare armor in hard-to-reach areas - the choice is yours (but good luck choosing between your paramour options, Triss and Yennefer, as that decision gave me anxiety for 80 hours). When you've finished the game's main story, you can simply download The Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone DLC for a few dozen more hours of hanging out with Geralt and Roach. Simply put, this is the best damn RPG you can play right now, so toss a coin to your witcher while you still have the time.
Disco Elysium
You play as a detective with a drinking problem and drug-induced amnesia in Disco Elysium, and you can perish in the first few minutes while attempting to retrieve your tie from the ceiling fan.
There is no traditional combat, but there are dialogue trees and skill checks, and upgrading skills is required to pass skill checks - but it's a slippery slope. If you increase your Drama too much, you may experience fits of hysteria. Everything in Disco Elysium is dependent on dice rolls that are added to your skill value and stat value - the resulting roll and addition of all the stats will inform you if you've completed a task, which can be as ridiculous as grabbing your tie from a ceiling fan.
Mass Effect 2
In this sequel, BioWare builds a beautiful shiny space house on top of the foundation laid down in Mass Effect (Commander Shepherd must navigate space racism and the potential predetermined destruction of the universe alongside a motley crew of aliens). Oh, and it gets rid of the goddamn Mako maneuvering as well. The combat system has been completely redesigned to evoke the duck and cover style of the Gears games - with Shepherd's special skills and your squad's unique abilities, you get dynamic gameplay that feels personalized.
The game's comfortable position as the space meat in the middle of the "introducing you to this world" and "destroying this world" sandwich provides some breathing room for the plot. The most incredible cast of characters, possibly ever, enters that breathing space. The romance options actually hurt your feelings, the backstories tug at your heartstrings, and the ideological debates among your friends paralyze you when the time comes to make a decision. Sure, RPGs are good at evoking emotion and forcing you to make game-time decisions, but the sheer magnitude with which Mass Effect 2 makes you care is a rare feat.
Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Link is a blank slate. A lovely, quiet blank canvas on which to paint a stealthy Sheikah, a fully-armored knight, or someone who runs around in their underwear throwing chickens at Moblins. Link's personality is so malleable that you can do whatever you want in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it just feels right, as, despite the impending apocalypse, people have their own lives to live and will let you do the same.
From spotting the tip of a new tower in the distance to navigating one of the mysterious mazes on the map's edge, your surroundings are so captivating that the world practically begs you to get distracted, fitting perfectly into the idea that Link has awoken after decades of slumber and simply can't stay still.
Demon's Souls Remake
The Demon's Souls remake is an amazingly stunning reimagination of a game that profoundly impacted the entire industry, and it may be one of the best launch titles ever. You may have played Demon's Souls, but the remake's new architecture and visual design, done in picture-perfect next-gen quality, will add mystery to well-known areas. The bosses appear more impossible than ever, looming over you in terrifying detail, forcing you to question whether you've chosen the right upgrades for your character or your weapons - and if you haven't, Demon's Souls will let you know. It's as if the game revels in your mistakes, forcing you to stew in them so you never make them again. Even when it's kicking your ass, this game will genuinely astound and dazzle you.
Wizardry 8
RPG franchises don't get much older than Wizardry, which debuted in 1981. Wizardry 8, the final game, was released 20 years later. It combines sci-fi elements with traditional fantasy elements, so there are guns and aliens alongside swords and spells. Wizardry 8's robust character creation tools are one of its best features. You can choose from 11 different races, including Humans and Elves and Faeries, Mooks, and Hobbits. Add in a selection of 15 classes, and you've got a stunning array of combinations to try in your party. Unlike The Elder Scrolls, which has similar character customization options, Wizardry 8 allows you to customize six party members rather than just one.
Dragon Age: Inquistion
Sorry for the major life lessons, but the people you surround yourself with reveal a lot about you as a person. The same holds true for Dragon Age: Inquisition. Exploring its vast dangerous areas alone would quickly turn you into a bloody red smudge, so tailoring your group of followers will be entirely dependent on how you prefer to play. Bloodthirsty melee players will benefit from keeping those mages at a safe distance from the action, or if you prefer to stay safely away from the action, you'll need to befriend The Iron Bull, who buffs in a very different way.
Although it may be a bit daunting for newbies, getting to know each of the characters is enough motivation to return to the realm of the Inquisition time and time again.
Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon spends no time in putting players in a gloomy mindset. But that's one of the reasons I like it so much. You command a group of adventurers as they slog into the depths of a dungeon, fighting foes in turn-based battles as they go. Because the game relies heavily on chance, you'll never be able to fall into a comfortable rhythm. The class system is nicely diversified, making it enjoyable to experiment with different party combinations. Each character has its own set of moves, some of which must be unlocked before they can be enhanced.

BloodBorne
Welcome to Yarnum, a dismal, solemn city straight out of a gothic novel, whose residents are plagued by a plague - not just of illness, but also of frightening monsters. Yarnum, despite being the last place you'd want to visit in real life, will tempt you, beckoning you to return after you've defeated its worst. You'll want to knock on more doors and listen to the strange cackles of peasants gone insane, or trek along another rooftop in search of a hidden mystery. You'll be working with six stats in the streamlined RPG aspects, and the character maker will allow you to create some of the most awesome Victorian Gothic heroes ever. The hats, man, the hats are so amazing.
Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic
RPGs might feel a little intimidating at times. If you're not a fan of the genre, you might be put off by a title that requires meticulousness, an infinite supply of patience, or a seemingly infinite amount of choice. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a game that will appeal to both experienced RPG players and those who have been hesitant to join the ranks. Set 4,000 years before the events of the films, you are tasked with learning the ways of the Force from the Jedi. At the outset of the game, you can choose between three character classes and whether your character will identify with the evil or light side of the Force.
The game is a Star Wars fan's paradise, capturing the movie's mystical, space fantasy core while imbuing the entire experience with choice. The voice acting is fantastic, the gameplay is simple, and the supporting characters are fantastic. You also get to use a karking lightsaber.
Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
You can pretend to be anybody you choose. You may do whatever you desire. Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is brimming with a crazy license to live in its world: you can devote yourself to Alchemy and go looking for a Daedra heart, adventure your way to the top of the Companions, or simply roam through Skyrim farming wheat and potatoes as a farmhand. Yes, the fear of a dragon destroying a nearby village is practically constant. Regardless of the impending apocalypse, your aims in Skyrim are simply that: your own. You are not compelled to accept quests.
While we wait for Elder Scrolls 6, rest confident that Skyrim launches you into the world with some plundered stuff and a full world at your disposal, and it's up to you to figure out what type of Dragonborn you want to be.
Persona 4 Golden
Persona 4 Golden is a part murder mystery, part spooky dungeon crawler, and all JRPG deliciousness. Its charming Japanese environment stands in stark contrast to the dark secrets that its people conceal, and it is this contrast that makes P4G so amazing. By the end of the game's 70-ish hour campaign, you'll genuinely care about this oddball ensemble of misfits, so much so that you'll methodically plan your calendar to ensure that you have enough time to spend with each of your in-game companions equally.
Persona 4 Golden on Vita builds on the foundation laid down by the PlayStation 2 classic, adding additional social linkages, additional identities, and, of course, the opportunity to play this incredible journey anywhere you choose, making it the definitive edition of a legendary RPG.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
In the Monster Hunter universe, there's minimal nuance — you mostly wind up doing precisely what the title suggests. However, Monster Hunter 4 assured that all monster hunting was monstrously enjoyable. Verticality was the star of the show in this game, with players able to scramble up walls or vault up surfaces before leaping down to momentarily ride the monsters themselves.
More remarkably, it accomplished these sophisticated achievements while remaining the series' most approachable game. These components alone would have sufficed to elevate it to greatness, but the addition of a wide range of weapons and a thrilling local and online multiplayer mode elevates it even more.
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout 3 was enjoyable, but Fallout: New Vegas is unforgettable. This is the narrative of the Courier, who nearly dies when the vital box he was bringing is taken outside of post-apocalyptic Sin City.
However, the primary story isn't as interesting as everything that surrounds it, whether it's the different factions with which the Courier develops reputations, the numerous options for dealing with explosive situations, or even the sense of humor interspersed throughout its several astounding hours of content. It was considerably more entertaining in action since it enabled special attacks via the series' V.A.T.S. The combat system has been updated, as have the animations for melee kills.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a significant step forward for Ubisoft's stabby series since it introduces NPCs to romance (whether you choose to be a Casanova or as chaste as a saint) and dialogue options for the first time.
Combine those revolutionary new elements with the reintroduction of naval warfare and enough sidequests, locales, and hidden mysteries to keep you busy for days, and you have Odyssey. Alexios or Kassandra, your misthios (mercenary), is entirely yours to shape any way you see fit. With nine different endings to choose from, the way you complete individual objectives will have an effect on the world around you, for better or worse. Do you understand what that means? Multiple playthroughs are possible.
Of course, if you dare, as exploring everywhere and doing everything will keep you busy for more than 100 hours (and everyone). Assassin's Creed will never be the same again after this RPG.
Borderlands 2
In Borderlands 2, you may be whatever kind of hero you want in a bizarre and disgusting universe. There are fart jokes, sure, but there are also skill trees that enable limitless character builds, whether you're a Gunzerker who likes to blow everything up or a Siren who likes to weave magic with your hands. Choose your poison, and Borderlands 2 will offer it up with a wry smirk, just like its protagonist, Moxie. Travel across Pandora looting and shooting your way to glory, customizing your character to hell and back.
Just don't bring an acid gun to a fire gunfight, you know? In the end, it doesn't matter what kind of Vault Hunter you create; all that matters is that you kick Handsome Jack's a$$ - and trust us, you'll want to.
Middle Earth: Shadow Of War
The Nemesis system returns in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and it certainly puts the RPG in RPG. Developing a powerful resentment of that goddamn Torz the Flesh Glutton - or whatever your Nemesis happens to be called - may not seem achievable at first, but after they kill you and start rising via the ranks, you'll soon find yourself fantasizing about defeating that vile imposter every time you boot up the game. Sure, playing the Ranger Talion as a stealth stabber or a Ranger who goes in sword-swinging is enjoyable, but what makes Shadow of War one of the great RPG games is the way it pushes you to manage your followers.
If you leave them to perish in combat, you might send them as spies or plant seeds of dissatisfaction. There are so many possibilities that even Sauron would be dazzled.
Dark Souls
Since King's Field, FromSoftware has been revolutionizing the RPG. While Demon's Souls was the first game to introduce current players to the studio's distinctively brutal approach to the genre, Dark Souls was where FromSoftware really found its stride. Dark Souls, with its emphasis on exploration, encourages players to explore and take chances in ways that few action RPGs have done before, and that few have completely captured since.
It resists its contemporaries' hand-holding and requires us to make errors in order to progress — whether that means learning how to traverse its lethal environment cautiously, take down one of its many formidable monsters, or just level our stats appropriately. It makes big problems out of modest fighting scenarios, making every moment memorable and every modest triumph an amazing reward.
Vagrant story
Vagrant Story, for all intents and purposes, should not have been a PlayStation game. The sheer number of systems communicating with one other, along with the top-tier visuals, should have destroyed Sony's little system. However, we were able to play Yasumi Matsuno's dungeon crawling masterpiece just a few months before the PS2 was released in the United States. You take on the role of Ashley Riot, a member of the Valendia Knights of Peace's elite "Riskbreaker" force.
When you are dropped into a haunted city in the thick of a civil war, you must battle with religious fanatics, cult leaders, and all sorts of ghosts and creatures as you unravel the secrets of Leá Monde and learn the truth behind a Duke's death. Heavy material for a PSX game, but it's handled wonderfully thanks to stunning visual direction and some outstanding translations. You may also construct gear, link abilities in combat, traverse a vast dungeon dubbed "The Iron Maiden," target particular body parts on adversaries, use super techniques, solve puzzles in 360-degree surroundings, and take on some of Square Enix's most difficult adversaries.
Diablo 2
Diablo II is widely regarded as not just the zenith of the Diablo series, but also the apex of the isometric action RPG genre we've come to know and love. Blizzard's return to its franchise that forces angels against demons with man imprisoned in the midst is a masterwork in atmospheric adventure, from its dark, gloomy soundtrack and visual trappings to its lengthy and high tale.
Diablo II's cooperative play and item trading, made both accessible and engaging by its unique classes and skills, the endless satisfaction of its kill and loot gameplay, and its near-limitless equipment variety and character customization, helped to successfully foster not only a communal spirit in each procedurally generated level of each dank dungeon but one of the greatest role-playing experiences ever.
Final Fantasy XII
Despite its tumultuous development, Final Fantasy XII changed what it meant to be a JRPG. Its mature plot was portrayed through the perspective of a bystander sent on a voyage filled with political intrigue, danger, and one of the strongest supporting casts in the series' history. The Active Dimension Battle system replaced random conflicts with an unprecedented level of strategy and tactical planning. The License Board allowed players to master any skill set with whichever character they wished. Most significantly, Final Fantasy XII provided us a greater grasp of Matsuno's Ivalice, a planet with a deep and believable past that is still appreciated by RPG enthusiasts today.
Kingdom Hearts 2
Kingdom Hearts 3 may have had fourteen years of development time behind it, but the second installment in the trilogy (excluding all other games in the franchise, including Re: Coded) is still superior. Kingdom Hearts2, published 3 years after its first version, is developing the wonderful premise of Kingdom Hearts (a young man called Sora obtains the power of a strange key bladder and has to explore the Disney world to stop the evil Heartless from the spread).
Whereas the original's little worlds were frequently mind-numbingly difficult to explore, the sequel has a gorgeous level design that feels more intelligible while remaining wide.
Furthermore, combat improvements make gameplay quicker and smoother, and the addition of Drive Forms allows you to change Sora's shape to unlock new powers. The boss battles are difficult but not impossible (there's no way to undo the years I chopped off my life during the Clayton encounter in the original), making it the finest game in the series for players who don't enjoy being irritated to the point of tearing out their eyelashes individually (see the aforementioned Clayton battle).
Assassins creed Valhalla
The game Assassin's Creed Valhalla successfully brings portions of the franchise's stealthier characteristics without jeopardising the components fans appreciate about the newer Creed games. Valhalla brings in the return of stealth, even providing you a follow-up task in the main campaign that harkens back to the days of the Brotherhood. It also allows you to participate in Viking raids and bring a battering ram to a castle's gates to enjoy the goodies that lay within. In this game, you may fulfil an Assassins contract while remaining anonymous, and then ten minutes later, you may blow a Viking horn while standing on the sternpost of a longship, heralding the arrival of your crew with style.
Valhalla is a stunning, captivating tale set in a magnificent 9th Century England - both of which will stick with you long after you put down the controller.
The Division 2
If you enjoy playing RPGs with your pals, The Division 2 is a great example of how to do a sequel well. Its dynamic universe reacts to your actions, and there's so much to do, like expanding your base and ultimately becoming a top-tier Division agent. The combination of action and spectacle will keep your eyes delighted, as some of the settings you'll be battling your way through beg to be raved about (in a good way, don;t worry).
Although the story is missing, there is plenty to keep you occupied and, more importantly, entertained, so if you're looking for an RPG with lots of gameplay that will have you and your pals shooting for hours on end, Division 2 is for you.
Dragon Age Origins
BioWare built its reputation with fantasy RPGs, and Dragon Age: Origins continued the company's heritage of pause-based combat mechanisms and party micromanagement. Its main strength, though, was its bleak setting in a dark fantasy world that combined the high fantasy of The Lord of the Rings with the low fantasy of A Song of Ice and Fire, where elves are treated like trash and magic comes at a steep price. In classic BioWare flair, it's also a character-driven game, with Claudia Black delivering a stunning performance as the witch Morrigan.
Shin Megami Tensie: Persona 3
Persona 3's ability to seamlessly transition between the actual world and dream is one of its most enticing qualities. The story follows a high school kid whose extracurricular activities include combating creatures who chew on human minds during the "Dark Hour," and he is surrounded by fascinating individuals who assist him in this duty. Its greatest legacy, however, is the debut of the Social Links system, which allows the player to level personalities (the representation of one's inner self) while completing normal-world activities as well as fighting monsters.
The Outer Worlds
Obsidian's best skill is on display in The Outer Worlds, which features RPGs with wonderful dialogue, compelling characters, and a setting that draws you in and never lets you go. The Outer Worlds feels like a neon space baby born from the union of Firefly and Mass Effect, and you are in charge of its future - no pressure.
Sure, this game requires a lot of talking in order to get to the tastiest, cystipig-meatiest sections, but practically every discussion you have with the Halcyon residents will amuse you in some manner. Brilliant voice acting combined with humorous comedy and surprisingly deft facial movements means you'll be picking favorites quickly.
Pokemon Sun and Moon
Pokémon has always been entertaining, but it has also stubbornly adhered to the overly-familiar pattern of traveling into gyms for bouts. Everything changed for the better in Pokemon Sun and Moon. It's a game about the outdoors, notably a picturesque place called "Alola" that's styled after Hawaii, and the hours that follow provide a pleasing combination of roleplaying and Pokemon combat. It's not just about fighting, though; there are quizzes, scavenger hunts, and a hefty dose of local culture that makes Alola feel real in a way that no other Pokémon setting has.
As an added bonus, Pokémon Sun and Moon clears away the clutter that prior games had accumulated in the user interface without compromising depth.
Neverwinter
Neverwinter is a free MMO, but it's also one of the best free RPG games available, especially if you enjoy the narrative and history of D&D's Forgotten Realms. You can choose from eight different classes, ranging from rogues and rangers to wizards and paladins. You'll get to go on some very remarkable adventures throughout the main campaign, dungeons, and raids, whether it's finding an unhappy demon somewhere to rest where they won't be disturbed by doom guides or participating in a 12-part campaign to fight Baphomet. Almost any important site in the Forgotten Realms, from Ravenloft to Chult, as well as every content in Neverwinter, old and new.
